I’ve been researching used cars recently and noticed a lot of discussion around automatic transmissions, especially in imported vehicles. A big chunk of the market comes from Japan used cars for export, and while the quality is often praised, I’ve seen mixed opinions about how automatics hold up once the cars are a few years older.

From my own experience and talking to a few mechanics, automatic gearboxes aren’t always “set and forget” like people expect. They can be smooth and reliable when new, but issues tend to show up in used imports depending on maintenance history and driving conditions in Japan.

Some common real-world problems I’ve come across include:

• Delayed shifting or rough gear changes in older CVT or torque converter systems
• Transmission overheating if fluid wasn’t regularly changed
• Sensor or electronic control faults, which can be expensive to diagnose
• Slipping gears, especially in high-mileage city-driven cars
• Difficulty finding affordable OEM parts for some models outside Japan

Interestingly, many buyers looking at Japan used cars for export assume low mileage automatically means low wear on the gearbox, but stop-and-go traffic in cities like Tokyo can still stress transmissions quite a bit.

I’m not saying automatics are bad far from it. When maintained properly, they’re great for daily driving. But I do think buyers should be more careful and not rely only on mileage or auction grades.
